Decommissioning

Sustainability: a priority in our way of operating

Sustainability has been a strategic topic since the establishment of Nexa and has always guided our business in all aspects. This means special attention to the management of waste and tailings resulting from the activities and their constant improvement to increasingly mitigate and reduce our socio-environmental impacts.

We invest in the development of new technologies aimed at the reuse of tailings and waste and we have three different ways of disposing them: return to the mine (backfill), dry stacking and, finally, we dispose of the materials in dams.

Currently, only 15% of the tailings and waste generated by us in Brazil and Peru are disposed of in dams.

Aligned with principles of transparency and to maintain effective communication with our stakeholders, we have a specific page on Dams and Deposits.

Decommissioning

We are committed to the full lifecycle of our facilities. Our responsibility is to take care of these locations, from initial planning during the period of operation and even after these units cease to operate, ensuring the creation of a legacy for the surrounding community.

In this scenario, the decommissioning of facilities is a strategic part of the business and, therefore, is accompanied by internal policies and involves different levels of company governance. All our operations have plans for decommissioning and future use, based on the most current technical references and best market practices in the world.

Our Management

All of our units have studies on the future use of the areas impacted by the operation, based on risk criteria. When a dam is deactivated, it goes through the decommissioning process and continues to be strictly controlled.

The decommissioning plans contain technical guidelines for a safe, complete, and efficient decommissioning process, as well as information on economic, environmental, and social actions.

Our performance

Examples of ongoing decommissioning plans at Nexa include the Santa Rosa and Sinaycocha units, both in Peru, which are conducting their final decommissioning works, to be carried out from 2022 to 2024. After this period, post-decommissioning monitoring will begin.

Another example is the Chapi unit, also in Peru. Currently, it is not operating and has been carrying out the closing works, in accordance with the commitment assumed in the approved decommissioning plan.

Our aspiration

Our aspiration is to implement a closure management system that considers the particularities of each of our operations, in a committed and responsible manner with socio-environmental issues.
